Rover Rescue Dog Show

May 3rd, 2009

Just returned from the Rover Rescue Dog Show. The staff/volunteers at Rover Rescue invent fun and interesting categories of competition so every family pet out there can be a blue ribbon winner. In today’s economy where people are looking for low-cost family fun, this show is a winner. It’s not too early to start practicing for next year!

Burton, last year’s “Most Kisses” champion, challenged all dogs to “pucker up” for a good cause and take his title away. It worked! The competition was stiff and Burt was only able to capture third place. Paree is the new champ and she wears the honor well!

A challenge to kids grades 3-5 – Burt

April 17th, 2009

blogcage.jpg“Be Kind to Animals” week starts May 4 and Burt has sniffed out a great contest for kids to showcase their creative writing skills AND help animals. Children in grades 3 to 5 are invited to use their imagination to finish a story about Duke, a dog that has been chained and is lonely and frightened.

The contest is sponsored by Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS) and runs through May 1. The winning entry will be featured on the NAHS website and the winner will be able to spend a day “behind the scenes” at the shelter.

Kids, put on your thinking caps, read the story, and enter today! If you enter, please let Burt know by sending a quick comment. Good luck!

April Showers Bring. . .

April 16th, 2009

rabbit-tulips-blog.jpgThose of us waiting for spring hope the answer is “May Flowers!” However, for our hard-working shelter folks, April Showers bring. . . puppies & kittens! To help prepare for the new arrivals, DuPage Animal Care & Control could use any of the following items:

Kitten Nursers (Bottles & Nipples)
Just Born Brand Kitten Formula
Heating Pads (Electric or Microwaveable)
Small or Medium Pet Carriers

Or, you can make a small monetary donation by purchasing a personalized “shower favor” to be placed on your favorite adoption animal’s enclosure. Favors are one for $2 or three for $5 with 100% of the proceeds benfiting the pets. Favors may be purchased in person at the DCACC shelter or over the phone via credit card–(630) 407-2819 or email at

Oh, and if you want to enjoy the May flowers with a new friend, DCACC invites you to become a foster parent–learn more.

Spring Adoptions Specials

KittyDespite the snow over the weekend, it really is spring. One of the unfortunate aspects of spring, however, is an overabundance of kittens. West Suburban Humane Society has the following specials:

2) Adult cats which are normally $150 can be adopted for the fee of $75.
3) Adult cats 7 years and older which are normally $75 can be adopted for the fee of $25.

A New Twist on the Easter Bunny

March 24th, 2009

RabbitAre you & the kids tired of the same old Easter Stuff? In the weeks leading up to Easter, all the talk is about “The Easter Bunny.” So, it’s no surprise that many children beg for a bunny of their own. Unfortunately, many people buy rabbits on a whim without understanding the care they require. As a result, rabbits are the third most surrendered pet–many appearing in shelters in the weeks after Easter. In an attempt to bring this situation to the forefront, DuPage County Animal Care & Control is promoting two alternatives that also benefit the shelter. Help spread the education mission by purchasing something from Make Mine Chocolate or adopting a stuffed rabbit.

When you think about it. . .wouldn’t you rather have chocolate anyway!
